Solo-Ensemble.com is the brainchild of Michael Ganus, a Middle School band director. It was developed in 2003 with the help of Douglas Abernathy, a band parent with web programming skills, in an attempt to solve many of the hassles associated with the operation of Solo and Ensemble contests at the local school level. The program is currently being used annually by several school districts in Texas.

The idea grew out of the frustration caused by the blizzard of paper that was required to move all over the place in order operate this kind of contest. With available technology and access to the internet available in just about every part of the school a good idea was born. Remove the paper from the contest and allow directors to enter their students’ information online, allow judges to type their comments and allow results to appear automatically on any internet connected monitor or projector.
